The Top 60 Funniest Movies Ever: Part Two

After seeing The Hangover Friday night, its amazing genius from Ed Helms and two other practically unheard-of leads inspired me to ponder the funniest Hollywood movies. The top 31 through 60 are here.

Drum roll please from numbers 30 through 1:

30. A Fish Called Wanda
29. Young Frankenstein
28. Old School
27. There's Something About Mary
26. Ferris Bueller's Day Off
25. Rushmore
24. Love and Death
23. Dr. Strangelove
22. Office Space
21. The Jerk
20. Happy Gilmore
19. This is Spinal Tap
18. Monty Python's The Meaning of Life
17. Animal House
16. School of Rock
15. Annie Hall
14. Vacation
13. The Wedding Singer
12. Fast Times at Ridgemont High
11. Monty Python and the Holy Grail
10. Borat
09. South Park
08. Wet Hot American Summer
07. Airplane!
06. Fletch
05. Blazing Saddles
04. Caddyshack
03. Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery
02. The Big Lebowski
01. The Hangover

I don't think I've forgotten any? I thought for a while about including Heathers because it's very funny (especially the pate scenes with Winona Ryder and her parents), but a little too dark. I'm sure older readers will feel slighted by the lack of a W.C. Fields movie (The Bank Dick almost made it). What do you think? What are your favorites?

  1. What about Coming to America? Spaceballs? The Three Amigos? The Gods Must be Crazy? or my personal favorite......drumroll...Grosse Point Blank.

  2. I would definitely agree that The Gods Must Be Crazy should be considered. You mentioning Grosse Point Blank makes me realize that I definitely made a mistake leaving off John Cusack's Better Off Dead and High Fidelity. Looks like there will be a little revising. Thanks for helping shape the list ...

  3. You only forgot the funniest movie ever...Raising Arizona!

  4. I thought about that. I agree that it could be added somewhere in the second half of the list. I think the rest of Nicholas Cage's abominable career somehow influenced my decision.

  5. 2nd half?! Really? It stands firmly as my favorite comedy of all time. Not only is the movie hysterical but the creation of the surreal world inhabited by each zany character is a masterpiece in any genre of movie making. The interesting part for me is that you obviously like the Coen Bros as you have the Big Lebowski at #2. The latter pales in comparison IMO (although I like it as well).

  6. FWIW, here's my top 5...

    1) Raising Arizona
    2) Airplane!
    3) Fletch
    4) Blazing Saddles
    5) Fast Times at Ridgemont High

Some you forgot: Murder By Death...Trading Places...Planes, Trains, and Automobiles...

  8. The funny thing about The Big Lebowski is I hated it the first time I saw it, but something completely clicked for me the second time I saw it. I became obsessed with watching it again and again after that.

Conversely, I immediately loved Raising Arizona the first time I saw it and liked it a little less the more I watched it repeatedly.

  9. Great top 5, Anonymous. Interesting how Raising Arizona really touches a nerve for several people here.

  10. I agree that I should add Kingpin (especially with my Quaker/Amish background). Will do that now, somewhere late in the top 60.

Slapshot and Ace Ventura are also classics, but there's only room for so much in the top 60.

Kind of crazy that I didn't include any Jim Carey movies in top 60. I think his best work appeared on TV in In Living Color. Someone on Facebook called the list illegitimate because Dumb and Dumber didn't make the cut. A fair opinion, but it still doesn't quite make the cut for me.

  13. I never saw that, but I'll definitely put it in my queue. The trailer (http://www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi1471021337/) is hilarious and you gotta love Hall and Oates' "You Make My Dreams" as the soundtrack. Plus, my dad was in the theater program at Indiana University with Kevin Kline. Thanks for the recommendation!

  14. Orange County and O Brother are both very good. Just outside of my top 60.
