I don't think I've forgotten any? I thought for a while about including Heathers because it's very funny (especially the pate scenes with Winona Ryder and her parents), but a little too dark. I'm sure older readers will feel slighted by the lack of a W.C. Fields movie (The Bank Dick almost made it). What do you think? What are your favorites?
What about Coming to America? Spaceballs? The Three Amigos? The Gods Must be Crazy? or my personal favorite......drumroll...Grosse Point Blank.

You mentioning Grosse Point Blank makes me realize that I definitely made a mistake leaving off John Cusack's Better Off Dead and High Fidelity. Looks like there will be a little revising. ReplyDeleteI thought about that. I agree that it could be added somewhere in the second half of the list. I think the rest of Nicholas Cage's abominable career somehow influenced my decision.
ReplyDelete2nd half?! Really? It stands firmly as my favorite comedy of all time. Not only is the movie hysterical but the creation of the surreal world inhabited by each zany character is a masterpiece in any genre of movie making. The interesting part for me is that you obviously like the Coen Bros as you have the Big Lebowski at #2. The latter pales in comparison IMO (although I like it as well).

ReplyDeleteThe funny thing about The Big Lebowski is I hated it the first time I saw it, but something completely clicked for me the second time I saw it. I became obsessed with watching it again and again after that.
ReplyDeleteConversely, I immediately loved Raising Arizona the first time I saw it and liked it a little less the more I watched it repeatedly.

ReplyDeleteSlapshot and Ace Ventura are also classics, but there's only room for so much in the top 60.
Kind of crazy that I didn't include any Jim Carey movies in top 60. I think his best work appeared on TV in In Living Color. Someone on Facebook called the list illegitimate because Dumb and Dumber didn't make the cut. A fair opinion, but it still doesn't quite make the cut for me.

The trailer (http://www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi1471021337/) is hilarious and you gotta love Hall and Oates' "You Make My Dreams" as the soundtrack. Plus, my dad was in the theater program at Indiana University with Kevin Kline. Thanks for the recommendation!
